On the occasion of a Mayors' Breakfast at the International Conference on Climate Action 2019 in Heidelberg, Mayor of Heidelberg Eckart Würzner announced that he joined the Global Covenant of Mayors Political Board.
Alongside with Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo, he will represent cities part of the European Covenant of Mayors movement at the global level. As a former member of the European Covenant Political Board, he will be able to leverage on his experience and share it with leaders from other parts of the world.
“It is a great honour to join the Board of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy. The contribution of this alliance to the fight against climate change is absolutely strategic, as it helps cities all over the world join forces, learn from and bring support to each other, as well as develop strategic collaboration with national governments, private actors, NGOs or academia”, declared Mayor Würzner.
Mayor Würzner started his mandate with a fruitful exchange with mayors from all around the world, during the Covenant Mayors’ session, discussing about the perception and technical feasibility of city climate action all over the world.
By achieving bold actions and undertaking ambitious -30% GHG-emission reduction objective by 2030, European cities part of the Covenant of Mayors are setting a bright path towards a sustainable future. As board members, Mayors Hidalgo and Würzner will promote the role of European cities as pioneers towards the emission-reduction objectives necessary to achieve the global target set by the Paris Agreement.
